Pine bark beetles are the major concern for the home and commercial owners in Houston, TX.
Description of the beetle: The method of finding this insect is by looking for masses of pitch (pitch tubes) around the bark of dying or dead pine trees. Adult beetles are tiny, colors are dark brown to black cylindrical beetles. Diagnosis of dead pine trees is made by the appearance of the pattern of galleries that appears underneath the bark and outside of the phloem-cambium layer.

Different bark beetles that attack pine trees are the black turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus terebrans, and engraver beetles. These beetles can produce similar symptoms caused by southern pine beetles, but may not result in rapid death of infested trees.
Life Cycle of the beetle: Adults fly from tree to tree where they start new colones in each tree. Male adult beetles release an attractant chemical (pheromone) that attracts female beetles to mate. Adult females deposit eggs and hatch in 3 to 34 days, depending on temperature, into cream-colored, legless larvae with brown heads. Larvae go through four stages until about 1/4 inch in length, over a period of 12 to 45 days before pupating. Adults hatch within 16 days and generation from egg to adult within be completed in 25 to 55 days.
Habitat and Food Source(s): Mouths and jaws are for chewing. Southern pine beetles attack mostly densely, slow growing pine with a high percentage of over-mature pine saw timber. Trees hurt by lightning and other natural events and by nearby construction are more likely to get infested. In the fall beetles scatter and go dormant. The months of March and throughout May they are the beetles prime months of attack. Mostly the week and dying pine trees get hit first.
